Here’s the program description:
“When it comes to tattoos, anthropologist Lars Krutak knows whereof he speaks—his own many traditional hand-tapped, hand-poked, and skin-stitched tattoos and almost 1,000 razor-and knife-cut scars testify to his quest for understanding this ancient art form. Krutak discusses how tattooing is a statement of worldviews, where humans, nature, and the supernatural are united. He shows how it also represents the reenactment of ancient myths, ancestral traditions, and the actions of deities and cultural heroes.
He then discusses how magical beliefs have inspired the creation of these enduring symbols, from the earliest known tattoos of 7,000 years ago in Chile and Peru to the 5,200-year-old “Iceman” found in the Alps and to many current cultures around the world including the Yupiget on St. Lawrence Island, the Kalinga in the Philippines, Theravada Buddhist monks in Thailand, and the Iban in Sarawak. Video clips from documentaries about tattoos supplement the presentation. Krutak is an anthropologist in the Natural History Museum. His books, “The Tattooing Arts of Tribal Women” and “Kalinga Tattoo: Ancient and Modern Expressions of the Tribal”, are available for signing at the program.”
Thanks to our friends at the Smithsonian for this great opportunity.
We’ll see you there!
